ZEMP Leathers and Summerdale High School

Every Bag Sold Feeds a Young Learner for One Year

ZEMP has always been committed to making a difference through innovation and sustainability. In February 2022, we launched a Design Initiative in collaboration with the Peninsula School Feeding Association and Summerdale High School in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town.

The Grade 9 learners were given the opportunity to design their dream bag and will be added to ZEMP Leathers DESIGN SAFARI™️ collection.

The Journey of the Creative Designers

After the initial introductions, it was clear that we have sparked something as the creative thinking kicked off. With our guidance regarding how the design process works, we had the opportunity to share key points to help the learners think of their design in a practical and functional way before adding their special touch of elegance and style.

With much time spent going through all the amazing designs, we had the difficult decision to narrow it down to six designs. We then decided to visit the school once more to sit with the six finalists and help hone in and conclude the design process to translate their ideas from paper to product.  Once more we had some difficult decisions to make as we select the final two designs that will be included in our selection.

Finally, we have made our decision on the Yola and the Siri, designed by Yolatha Mgebezo and Likhona Geca, two exceptional grade 9 learners.

Both bags feature ZEMP Leathers’ signature turquoise-certified organic cotton lining and vegetable-tanned leather.

The bags from this Design Initiative can now be pre-ordered for delivery in November, either at or one of Zemp’s stockists across South Africa.
